It’s easy to overlook some parts of your home when you’re considering improving the curb appeal. Making improvements to the garage door could have a significant impact on your home’s aesthetic ability to sell.

Since the garage door is the largest single part of the façade of a house, it’s one of the first things people notice about your home. If it looks outdated, people may assume the rest of the house is also outdated. A sleek, new garage door can make your home look like the most valuable place on the block.

Here are four tips to bolster your home’s curb appeal with your garage door!

Add Windows

Many people might stray away from windows on the garage door, but many new homes now have them built in. This new trend is a sought-after feature for many new home buyers because it takes away the bulky look of a traditional door and can transform your garage. Natural light in the garage makes it feel more open, even when the door is shut.

“Windows add so much for the aesthetic perception of a garage,” said Travis Trentham, a Sears Garage Door franchise owner in Phoenix. “Natural light can take an old musty garage and turn it into a relaxing space for a work bench or even a safe place for the kids to play on a rainy day.”

You may be concerned about privacy, but windows are normally on the top section of the garage door. So, unless they have a ladder, most people will not have the ability to look inside your garage.

Update the Hardware

Even the smallest change can make a significant impact on your home’s curb appeal, and it doesn’t have to hurt your wallet, either.

“Hardware is a new trend that I see on many homes and, believe it or not, it changes the way the whole door looks,” Trentham said. “You can find a set of hardware for anywhere between $25-50 at a local hardware store. It’s going to be the best bang for your buck.”

There are many different types of hardware you can add to the garage door to give it a different vibe, add a subtle but noticeable change and increase the aesthetics of the door. These decorative additions are perfect for anyone on a budget.

Paint the Door

Painting your garage’s door can be one of the best investments. Changing the primary color is the obvious choice, but you might want to consider just adding an accent color.

“Accent colors around the trim add a great touch to the home,” Trentham said. “Subtle changes can go a long way when you’re adding them to the largest moving part of your home. You don’t need to go crazy on color, either. It can be the slightest change in the hue that will make your garage stand out.”

Retire and Replace

If you have an older home, you may want to just replace that old garage door with a brand new one. Sears Garage Doors specialists will come and install a new garage door for you. If you’re looking to replace your garage door, you can plan and pick your favorite to see how it will look on your home.
