Enter daily at HGTV.com until 5:00 p.m. ET on June 2, 2017, for your chance to win a beautiful state-of-the-art home in Scottsdale, Arizona, along with a 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE550e 4MATIC® and $100,000 from Quicken Loans!

The Zing Blog had a chance to ask some of the professionals behind the creation of this year’s Southwestern-style home a few questions – including what the process was like, some of their favorite features and what they hope the winner enjoys most at their new address!

What factors led to the city of Scottsdale, Arizona, being chosen as the site of this year’s HGTV Smart Home?

Guest bedroom

“We look for neighborhoods and cities with a sophisticated combination of tech and culture that make for a desirable place to live. Following the homes in Raleigh, Austin and Nashville, we felt Scottsdale was an impeccable choice,” said Ron Feinbaum, HGTV’s general manager of home promotions. “It’s such a vibrant destination for those seeking year-round family fun, whether on vacation or as a place to call home.”

How long did it take to build this year’s home, and how many people were involved?

“The build schedule was around six months,” said Project Manager Scott Branscom. “With any build, it takes several hundred folks of all skill levels to complete the construction process.”

What types of challenges did the team face during construction, and how did they overcome them?

“With the HGTV Smart Home, the biggest challenge is integrating the many cool tech items into a cohesive home automation platform,” Branscom explained. “Our goal is to make home automation easy to use by anyone, even if they are not tech savvy.”

Which aspects of the American Southwest inspired the floor plan for the home and the overall aesthetic?

Dining room

“Definitely the landscape!” exclaimed host and designer Tiffany Brooks. “I picked up on the colors of the desert. One night I saw a sunset and that influenced an entire color scheme.”

Gallery artwork, sculptures and plant life come together to create a desert feeling in this home. What styling tips can you share with other homeowners?

“Be spontaneous! And only use what you love,” recommended Brooks. “Keeping that in mind, the only thing you would have to concern yourself with is the spacing for each item. To solve that is simple … plan your layouts on the floor, take a photo and adjust accordingly.”

Was the patio and pool area designed to be an extension of the inside of the home from a design perspective or have it’s own vibe to blend with the surroundings?

“In Arizona, you have almost all year-round entertaining! Why not have a space outside that is an extension of the inside?” suggested Brooks. “My spatial planning usually starts from what’s going on inside. Referencing the interiors when you are planning helps to make your outside spaces look more intentional and functional.”

How does the team determine which smart amenities are selected?

Kitchen appliances

“We work with our sponsors to ensure their most innovative products are center stage at our home,” Brooks answered. “We also lean on our tech consultant to determine the latest smart technology solutions for the home.”

Speaking of technology, the kitchen has a state-of-the-art wine fridge! What are some of the other high-tech features in the home?

“There are over 25 different brands represented throughout the house,” said Carley Knobloch, tech consultant. “But a few features that aren’t room-specific but installed throughout the house are the smart lighting system and outlets from Legrand, the audio/visual system run by Savant and the home’s wireless security system from SimpliSafe, all of which can be controlled via apps,” she added.

Which aspects, both internal and external do you hope the winner of the HGTV Smart Home will utilize or appreciate most?

“When putting technology in the house, I always have the homeowner and their family in mind,” explained Knobloch. “I’m always prioritizing safety (like the smart locks), convenience (like shades and lights you can operate from anywhere) and fun (like a cool outdoor television and a pet monitor!). Some of the products are more utilitarian (like the dryer closet in the laundry room or the leak sensors), and some are more whimsical (like the digital picture frames that rotate a gallery of art with a wave of your hand), but they all work together to outfit a beautifully-designed home with connected devices to make life easier for the family that lives there.”

What are some ways homeowners can implement the latest HGTV Smart Home technology in their own homes?

Outside of a home

“Start with a strong, secure wireless router. I just wrote an article about some new ones and eight things your wireless router should be able to do,” said Knobloch.

“Let your first piece of smart home technology solve a deeply rooted problem in your home. Worried about the cats when you go out of town? So many people coming and going that you never know if the doors are locked? Want a lighted path from your garage to the kitchen when you come in late at night? There are smart devices and systems that can solve for these problems – start there,” she added.

“In addition, security and energy savings are two compelling stories that most consumers can get behind. Smart alarm and monitoring systems, smart locks, smart thermostats, and smart lighting systems are good places to start, generally speaking.”
