  4. Quick and Thoughtful Housewarming Gift Ideas
There seem to be seasons where a lot of your friends and family go through the same life event. The five or so years where all of your friends get married and the following years where they all have babies. There is also the season where it seems like everyone buys a house or moves into an apartment.

I’m in that season right now. It feels like every week another friend, cousin or coworker is messaging me to let me know they’re moving.

It’s an exciting time! People are starting a new chapter in their lives, and you naturally want to get them a little token of appreciation to take into that phase. But what do you get them?

Our schedules are busy and sometimes it’s difficult to find the time to run to the store to pick out the perfect, thoughtful housewarming gift. But don’t worry! I’m sharing my top five go-to housewarming gifts that are a little more thoughtful than a bottle of wine, but just as quick and easy.

Menu Board

I have a friend who’s a master planner. Seriously, this woman’s organizational skills would impress anyone. I’ve seen her organize small things like dinner parties to massive trips where she has to meal plan for 70+ people. Each and every time, she makes it look so easy.

One of the things she has in her kitchen is a menu board. She writes what the meals will be for each day of the week. There’s no guesswork. She makes a plan and keeps weeknights stress free. It also looks really cute hanging on her kitchen wall.

When I hear one of my friends is moving, especially one I know likes to cook, a menu board is one of my favorite gifts to give.

It’s so simple; all you need is a chalkboard, a permanent marker or a paint pen. I like to throw in some recipe cards with personal recipe favorites and a piece of chalk so they can write on the board, too.

Helpful Tip: Keep an eye out at dollar stores and store dollar sections for inexpensive chalkboards. I keep them stocked so I already have one at my house, ready to go.

All you need to do is title the board and write the first letter for each day of the week along the left side of the board with your marker or paint pen.

Framed Map

I live in Detroit, and there’s a lot of hometown pride here. One of my favorite pieces in my home is a street map of downtown Detroit in the 1920s. It’s a simple black and white print that hangs above my couch. Whenever people come over, it’s the first thing they notice, and they almost always compliment it.

People are proud of their hometowns. Whether it’s their state or their city, they represent it with pride. That’s why one of my favorite housewarming gifts, especially if the recipient has moved to a new city or state, is a framed map of their new area or home town.

Just like the one in my living room, maps are trendy and when it’s a place that means a lot to you, it’s a sentimental way to decorate.

Frame a map of the state and write “home sweet home” on the matting. Or maybe you can frame a street map of their new city and draw a little red heart where their house is. However you do it, a framed map will be a welcomed gift (and they’re pretty simple too).

Key Holder

Key Holder

I love to give housewarming gifts because I know how much I love receiving them. One of my favorite gifts was a painting a friend of mine did on a sliver from a tree trunk. How creative!

She made a few paint strokes with different shades of blue paint. Once that was dry, she painted a few strokes of thin, clear glue over top of it. Immediately after painting the glue, she sprinkled on gold micro beads.

The result was beautiful! And it was so easy to do. I’ve since made a few for my friends, and it literally only takes a few minutes. And don’t worry, you don’t have to cut the tree trunk, you can buy them at the craft store for a few bucks.

When I gift them, I make it a little different by adding a C-hook to the board. No tools necessary, you just twist the hook into the board. It turns a piece of art into a functioning key holder!

  1. I’m a rather practical person, for a house warming gift I like to give a kitchen grade fire extinguisher and a hand-crank flashlight with a weather radio built in. I can’t think of a more practical way to say “I love you”

    1. Hi Mary! I love that idea! Practical things you need in a pinch, but most people don’t think to buy for themselves. Great suggestion!

    2. You’re right! Those are excellent ideas for gifts, especially the fire extinguisher. Practicality is definitely the best way of showing you care. Thanks for your comment!
