Opportunity Detroit - Quicken Loans Zing BlogWho doesn’t admire Indiana Jones? I don’t think we can necessarily call Paul W. Smith (WJR) and Stephen Luigi Piazza (Quicken Loans) explorers, but they’re definitely good at discovering little-known gems in and around Detroit. They host a weekly show on WJR-760 AM that features the people making a positive impact on the city! Here’s a rundown for tonight’s show.

You’ll meet a woman whose favorite color is green! Rebecca Salminen Witt is the president of Greening of Detroit, which is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting planting, environmental education and environmental advocacy. The Greening of Detroit is responsible for planting over 6,000 trees a year and has planted over 81,000 trees in the region. Her program operates three large farm sites in the city and provides a hands-on training program about farming and agriculture education.

You’ll hear from an award-winning columnist from the Detroit News. Luther Keith is executive director of ARISE Detroit! ARISE, which stands for Activating Resources and Inspiring Service and Empowerment, has a mission to increase volunteerism for the many worthwhile programs and activities in the community. ARISE links together hundreds of programs and agencies that focus on family issues, anti-violence, parenting, literacy, education and neighborhood development. Luther, who has served as a sports writer, state capitol correspondent, state editor and more, grew interested in developing such an organization when reporting on issues related to Detroit revitalization. You’ll learn about a club dedicated the art, music and literature. Treena Flannery Ericson is the gallery director for The Scarab Club. The club’s venue holds art exhibitions, musical performances, poetry readings and workshops. The club was founded in 1907 as a community resource for art, and Treena has served as director since 2003. The club hosts eight exhibitions annually, and will be hosting a free reception on Friday, August 9 from 6-9 p.m. ET. Find out more on the club at ScarabClub.org.

Don’t forget to tune in this Friday evening, August 9, at 7:00 p.m. ET for all that and more!
