Making fitness a priority can be a struggle no matter what your age. When you’re in college, it’s easy to get caught up in a cycle of cramming for a test, eating all the wrong things and not getting enough sleep. When you’re an adult, desk jobs, nights out with friends or tending to kids often comes before physical fitness. As an older adult, exercise may seem intimidating or limited depending on health, skill level and mobility.

Regardless of personal schedules, it’s important to know that when you do have time and you want to keep your body active, you can do so in a way that doesn’t require a lot of time or money.

I’ve gathered five fitness programs for different ages that can be done in small spaces with minimal to little equipment. Whether you’re 20 or 70, here are a few ways to get your body moving!

Leslie Sansone is not only America’s #1 Walking Expert, she helped me walk away the pounds after college so I could maintain a healthy weight long after the days of walking 30 minutes to class was over and I was at a sedentary job. In the space of a beach towel, I was able to follow along in my small living room to a three-mile program that left my legs and arms pleasantly sore.

There are more than 35 programs to choose from, such as the Mega Miles Set, which recruits even more muscle as you briskly walk. You can purchase these routines and more via DVD or a download straight to your computer. If you simply want to use your phone to walk, she has an iOS and Android app ($4.99 monthly but the first month is free or $49.99 annually) you can download to work out anywhere Wi-Fi, 4G or LTE is available.

Franklin Antoian is an ACE personal trainer and founder of the personal training website, iBodyFit.com. On the site, users can select different levels of training programs based on fitness goals, skill level, time and equipment. All plans include an individualized workout plan, custom diet, personal profile page, support from Franklin and access to additional online workouts. You can get in shape at home with basic equipment like exercise balls and dumbbells, or you can simply use your body weight for resistance.

As one of Shape Magazine’s Top 50 Trainers in America, Antoian shares advice and offers reviews on products on his blog. He recommends Tone-y-Bands to support at-home training, saying, “These lightweight bands replace the old ankle and wrist weights that exercisers used to wear. You can burn calories just by wearing them throughout the day.”

Plans start at $49 and you can preview sample workout videos to get an idea of some of the moves, including squats, pushups, bicep curls and crunches.

Young and Active

Dempsey Marks is a certified fitness trainer, yoga instructor and competitor who is focused on helping college students and other young adults get fit and healthy. After personally dealing with health problems upon entering college, Marks worked with specialists and doctors to diagnose her stomach issue and find the right types of foods to eat. She also learned how being physically fit can aid the digestive system. She founded DempseyFIT as a place to share her health and fitness perspectives and help others begin positive habits at a young age.

Along with co-creator Olivia Weinstein, Marks released Pregame Fit, a fitness program for college students who want to get in shape and not miss out on typical college indulgences (3 a.m. pizza, anyone?).

For the college student price of $29.99, you get 12 weeks of workouts that are only 30 minutes per day and can be completed in a 5-by-5-foot space (aka your dorm room!) without the need for expensive equipment. The movements combine strength, high- and low-intensity cardio and flexibility training. There’s also a nutrition guide that will help you make good food choices, get rid of that Freshman-15 (pounds) and even learn some dorm-room recipes!

It’s important to maintain strong bones as you age, so Suzanne Andrews, a licensed occupational therapy clinician, founded Functional Fitness in 2008. Her show is broadcast on 113 PBS stations, focusing on strength and mobility for those over age 40. After sustaining serious back, shoulder and neck injuries, Andrews developed a special method that uses sequencing, pacing and repetitions at a slower pace to achieve positive results.

She has created a new DVD that promotes an osteoporosis-safe workout. The movements can be done in small spaces and even if you have limited mobility, there’s a seated version! It’s available for $19.99 on her site, which also features workouts for those with arthritis, overactive bladder, diabetes and more.

If you’re looking for variety and want to experience strength training, yoga, barre and more, check out AcaciaTV. There are more than 450 workouts that range from under 10 minutes to over an hour and feature programs from SparkPeople yoga personality Shiva Rea, reality star Bethenny Frankel, and many others. There’s even a members-only Facebook page where you can share experiences, ask questions, get tips and be a part of a larger active community.

It’s $6.99 per month and $49.99 per year, and you can sign up for a free 10-day trial. You can exercise wherever there is Internet access or download playlists on iTunes. It’s available as an add-on subscription via Amazon video for Amazon Prime members on select TVs, streaming media players, mobile devices, Amazon Fire TV, and more.

These are just a handful of programs that are available on the market and are an affordable way to keep your joints moving, your blood flowing and your heart rate at optimum levels. It was a joy to produce and even more of a joy to get all the letters from people who’ve benefitted from this osteoporosis safe workout. Also nice to see such a wonderful variety of DVDs for people to work out at home to. It’s always best to have a selection to keep the motivation.

  2. I in week 16 of full knee replacement.
    Have maintained all Physical Therapy exercises and added it to them under the care of a certified PPT; started spinning, yes on a bike spinning classes a week ago in addition to strength training for my surgical knee.
    I was highly motivated as a high school and college wrestler the disciplines around managing my health comes easy, but it is very easy to over do it.
    My goal is to be ready for the local Tour De cure in June….I will be ready even if only able to ride 20 miles verses the 60 plus I had hoped for.
    Understand how our body heals and the mechanics of movement is so cool to experience and learn.
    Most important to staying healthy is to keep moving with purpose and intentionality!
