Who likes saving money? I know, dumb question, right? With a little help, saving money isn’t as difficult as you may think. From student discounts to couponing, there are many different ways to accomplish this feat.
However, there are also some discounts that may not be as obvious as clipping coupons out of your local Sunday newspaper. With a new year just getting underway, there’s probably more than a few of you with a resolution that revolves around saving money. To help get you (and anyone else who wants to save money) off on the right foot, let’s take a closer look at some alternative ways to save.
Leave Items in Your Online Shopping Cart
I heard about this little tip a while ago, but I never put it to good use until recently, and it was on accident. While doing some online holiday shopping, the price of an item I was looking at wouldn’t appear until it was in my online shopping cart. After selecting a size and color, I placed the item in the cart and the price appeared. I wasn’t pleased with the price, so I left the website.
What I thought would be the end of that turned out to be just the beginning. Two or three days later, I received an email with a subject line that read something along the lines of “We Love What’s in Your Shopping Cart.” I opened the email, and it had a coupon for $25 off my purchase. I was pleasantly surprised and decided to use the discount to my advantage.
While this isn’t guaranteed to work with every online store, certain retailers take advantage of this opportunity to entice shoppers who have already shown interest in their products.
If you’ve been with the same car insurance or cell phone company for an extended period of time, it’s time to shop around. Many competing companies will offer you a better deal to leave your current provider and start a new contract with them. In many cases, they’ll also pay the required fee to break your current contract. At the very least, look around to see what’s available. If you’ve been with the same provider for a long time, chances are you don’t even know what other companies have available. Do your homework.
Most people are aware of military discounts. This is just a reminder of some of the different places that offer discounts to active or retired service members. Many golf courses offer reduced rates to military members. Whether it’s X amount off the round or a free cart rental, if you’re hitting the links, be sure to ask about military discounts if you’re eligible.
Here are some other stores that offer military discounts that you may not know about:
- Home Depot
- AMC Theatres
Be sure to call ahead and verify whether a military discount is available. Each establishment listed above requires an in-store purchase to be made to qualify for the discount.
There you have it. Three simple, but effective ways to help you save money. Are you taking advantage of them (if you’re eligible)?
