It doesn’t get better than spending a summer night drinking coffee on your front porch, watching the neighbors pass by. It’s one of the most relaxing activities of the warmer months, but it can be hard to relax if you’re not comfortable.
If your front porch needs a little something extra this season, these five ideas will put you on the right path.
Bring in Some Nature
You have to display your address on your home, so why not make it more attention grabbing with a planter box?
Anything & Everything has a great tutorial on how to make one yourself! All you need is some leftover plywood, a few nails, a little bit of paint and polyurethane, address numbers and, of course, the flowers of your choice. It’s a pretty easy weekend project.
One thing you’ll want to remember is that the flowers will need to be watered, so you’ll need holes in the bottom of the planter box to allow the water to drain, which will keep the flowers healthy longer.
A Pop of Color
A great way to bring some more personality and life to your front porch is to add a pop of color. The writer of Tatertots & Jello did a great job of this with her front porch. She kept the siding and flooring neutral, opting for a chic charcoal gray color, but punched up the style with bright yellow flowers, furniture and pillows – and even the door.
You could also paint lanterns or tiki torches in the same color or add candles.
Yellow is a great choice for a summertime pop of color. It’s a warm and cheerful color that’s used to evoke happiness, but it’s not the only suitable color choice out there. If you’re looking for something calming, you can use blues or greens for a more natural feel.
Light It Up
If you’ve been on Pinterest or opened a home décor magazine lately, you’ve probably seen a picture of café lights strung above a backyard patio or on the side of a house. They’re so beautiful and add a touch of sophistication, so why keep them hidden in the backyard? Bring them out front to brighten your porch and add some style in one easy step.
These work great if you have a covered porch, like in the photo above. If you don’t have a covered porch but still want attention grabbing lights, try using Edison bulbs in your light sockets or in electric or battery powered lanterns!
Make It Comfy
If you plan on sitting on your front porch, especially for an extended period of time, you’ll want it to be comfortable. Add some comfort with a few simple touches, like a rug, pillows and various seating options.
Mixing and matching your seating options gives you some versatility. Have a chair so you can sit up straight if you’d like, but adding a bench, a porch swing or a love seat gives you the option to lean back when you want to.
Create Some Privacy
A new trend for porches is hanging outdoor drapes. They add a touch of luxury to your home and give you some privacy.
Outdoor drapes are more durable and are manufactured to withstand the elements better than traditional indoor drapes. They come in an array of styles and colors too, so you can find them to match any décor.
