Who doesn’t love a little sightseeing? I know I do. I’ve seen a lot of random landmarks in my travels over the years, including North America’s second northernmost McDonald’s in fabulous Fairbanks, Alaska, the world’s highest manmade fountain just outside Phoenix, Arizona, and a strange office building that’s constructed as a giant basket near Columbus, Ohio. I even took in the breathtaking views of New York City atop the World Trade Center’s South Tower just four short months before the tragic attacks of 2001.
While they’re landmarks I won’t soon forget, they didn’t make Travel + Leisure’s list of the world’s most popular landmarks. Check out what destinations were most frequented by readers according to T+L’s inaugural landmarks survey:
-
Statue of Liberty
New York City
-
Empire State Building
New York City
-
Golden Gate Bridge
San Francisco
-
Eiffel Tower
Paris
-
Big Ben
London
-
Colosseum
Rome
-
Millennium Park
Chicago
-
St. Peter’s Basilica
Rome
-
Swiss Re Building
London
-
The High Line
New York City
Can you believe it? I’ve only seen two of the famed landmarks on the list, all during my trip to New York City over a decade ago! Looks like I’ve got a lot more traveling to do (more legit landmarks, less arbitrarily important McDonald’s locations).
How many of these popular marvels have you experienced? Are there any landmarks you’re shocked not to see on the list? I was surprised that the Washington Monument and Mount Rushmore weren’t among the bunch. Tell us what you think!
