Top 10 Spring Cleaning Tips

Hey homeowners! Spring is here, and along the same lines – it’s probably time to give your home a good thorough cleaning after the long winter.  To help with that, here are ten cleaning tips.  Because with so much to do – it’s easy to miss a few things that could significantly improve the appearance of your home.

1. Do you have hardwood floors?  This may be a good time to give them a fresh coat of sealant or protective buffer.  Of course if you have a lot of furniture on the floors, plan ahead so there’s ample time for you to move the furniture the sealant to dry.

2. Are your kitchen cabinets looking a bit worn?  Try using wood soap (if it’s made out of wood) and giving it a good wash.  If it’s not wood, consider giving it a fresh coat of paint.

3. Since vacuuming is pretty much part of every household, invest in a good vacuum.  I prefer Dysons, but it’s up to you.  Just don’t wear yourself out by dragging around a heavy vacuum that has weak suction – it wastes time and makes your life miserable.

4. Don’t forget to get the dust behind your fridge on the coils as it makes the appliance perform less efficiently. The same goes for ceiling fixtures, like cleaning your lights because the dust/grime on the covers makes the light seem like it’s less bright.  Lastly, you should probably grab the dust from air vents (by using your vacuum attachment), as blowing dust in the air can’t be good for allergies.

5. Clean from top to bottom.  If you’re dusting, make sure you haven’t already swept the floor.  If you haven’t cleaned the ceiling fixtures yet, be sure to wait on the floors.  Regardless of what you’re doing, always consider the order you clean in- so that you don’t have to spend time redoing previously cleaned areas.

6. Clean from dry to wet.  This is really simple, moping will take twice or even three times as long if you didn’t sweep well first.  The same goes with dust and dirt, so be sure to sweep and get everything “dry” first, before wetting it down and cleaning with water.

7. Listen to music when you clean.  This may sound silly, but music could potentially make cleaning not only more interesting, but also give you energy to clean more quickly.  So next time, try blasting music as you go through the house – cleaning from room to room.

8. If you have pets, it may be a good idea to stick the dog in the yard while you clean, so they won’t run through the piles of dirt you just swept up or walk all over wet floors.

9. Organize before cleaning.  Cleaning doesn’t take very long when you don’t have to clean around objects in your way.  So the first thing to do is to organize and get rid of clutter before you start.  Once everything is put away, you’ll have more surface space to work with.

10. Let cleaners sit after spraying.  This will eliminate a lot of the unnecessary scrubbing if you give the cleaners time to soak in and break down the particles.
