Can you believe next week we’ll be saying hasta la vista to summer, and hello to fall weather? This may be good news if you’ve had a busy, fun-filled summer and accomplished everything on your to-do list for the warmest season of the year! But if you’re like me and most of the 100 people I polled last week, you definitely aren’t ready to say goodbye yet. In an email survey, I asked: What have you neglected to do all summer long and still want to cross off your do list?
I received a laundry list of responses! It was easy to lump the majority of responses into four categories: home improvements, family time, vacation and me time. The most popular category was “vacation” by far with 35% of responses. Most responders wished that they’d taken a vacation this summer —somewhere, anywhere! The vacation wish list included: Cedar Point, out of state to visit relatives, up north camping, and last-minute road trips.
In second place was home improvements with 27% of responses. Time-consuming chores such as: Clean the garage, finish the basement, do yard work and clean the gutters made the list. It’s no wonder this long list of work has been put off all season long!
Family time took the third slot with 19% of responses. Pleasantville-type things like bike riding, family picnics and quality time with the kids made this list, which also had a little bit of overlap with the vacation list.
The last major category of responses, with 16%, was me time. Start yoga class, go shopping and run a marathon landed on this list. I was surprised that things such as spa visits and shoe shopping didn’t make it on the list. Most of the responders seemed to be family focused!
The most common item: Take a vacation, play baseball, take a road trip, go fishing and hit the pool.
The most picturesque item: Spend an entire day reading out in the sun with a drink in hand.
The most philanthropic item listed: Donate clothing.
The most unusual things listed: Spend $10 in an arcade and create art with sidewalk chalk.
I was truly inspired by all of the responders and hurried out last weekend to cross two items off my summer to-do list including cleaning out my garage. Hopefully this is a friendly reminder to get going on the things remaining on your summer list! If you’d like to share the items on your summer to-do list, share them below.
