The Memorial Day holiday is upon us and this is the perfect time to take full advantage of the three-day weekend by improving the value and look of your home. Assuming the weather is favorable, there are a number of outdoor projects that will accomplish this goal. For instance, planting some nice trees — a beautiful Japanese Maple, a flowering Magnolia or Cherry Blossom — can greatly increase your home’s charm. Putting a new coat of paint on the outside, replacing broken screens, fixing the roof or re-staining the deck are also good cosmetic repairs. Even more minor things like pulling the weeds, trimming overgrown trees and planting a simple flat of flowers can clean up your home’s appearance.

There are also indoor projects that you can tackle that will pay off in the long run, such as remodeling or updating your kitchen or bathroom. Major updates to these rooms, such as new appliances or cabinets have a high return-on-investment. But even smaller updates such as new paint or fixtures also go a long way toward adding to your home’s value.

Anything to make your home more attractive is good not only for yourself, but especially if you’re thinking of selling your house; it will be more attractive to prospective buyers.
