Yesterday, treasuries took a dive following the 5 year TIPS (inflation-indexed treasuries) auction and have continued falling ahead of today’s 2 year Treasury note auction. The TIPS auction resulted in a negative yield for the first time in U.S. history. This means that investors are willing to pay the government for the privilege of having the Treasury keep their principal safe.
Capital Markets Update – Bond Market Driven by Lackluster Auction of TIPS

Bond and stock prices rallied yesterday but gave much of their early gains back in the afternoon. Action in the bond market was largely driven by a lackluster auction of $11 billion of five year TIPS (Treasury Inflation Protected Securities) and the looming FOMC meeting. Treasury prices are slightly higher this morning as today’s FOMC meeting poses little threat of an interest rate increase.
