This Sunday, November 11, 2012, is Veterans Day. And surprisingly, at least to me, many people confuse the events surrounding Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Why do we have two specific holidays to honor Veterans? What is the difference? At Quicken Loans, we keep our finger very closely on the pulse of the military community. That’s why it’s important for us to help spread the word and raise awareness about the importance and the history of this tradition-rich holiday.

This past Memorial Day weekend I did some of the usual things we Americans do. I had a BBQ. I watched some of the TV specials yesterday about the day. I reflected about what the day meant. Then the memories hit me. Hard

Every year, Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery, where an American flag is placed on each grave. In addition, the president or vice-president gives a speech honoring the dead and lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Memorial Day is fast approaching and that means summer is just around the corner. For those of us who are veterans or personally know veterans who have passed away, this day is extra special. My own grandfather fought in WWII, making this day a sobering reminder of the sacrifice he and his fellow countrymen made to protect our country.
