When was the last time you went toy shopping on Woodward Avenue?
If your last memory is at Hudson’s, it’s time to make a new one at Spielhaus Toys!
This specialty retailer was a semifinalist in the Hatch Detroit contest this year and recently opened a pop-up shop as part of D:hive’s pilot program, using space donated by Bedrock Real Estate Services. Located at 1249 Woodward Avenue, kids of all ages (and parents too) can find classic toys, games, arts and crafts, books and more.
The brainchild of former engineer-turned-entrepreneur, Kurt Spieles, the space feels like stepping into a whimsical tree house but on ground level. Displays feature puppets, science kits, books, stuffed toys, stickers and even a cozy reading nook.
This isn’t a smaller version of a big box store. You won’t find Barbie or Batman here, but that’s the point. You’ll find wooden toys made in Germany, eco-friendly playthings and items that bring a child’s imagination to life. I even found Spirograph, and instantly recalled the only time in life I liked geometry. If you’re looking for that nostalgic feeling when shopping for the loved ones in your life this holiday season, this 400-sq foot space has got you covered.
Spieles plans to host events that bring families together, like story times, a puppet-making workshop and other children’s entertainment. He also plans to showcase some local toy creators and use this two-month test to get a better understanding of the market in the Detroit area and seek a permanent store in the D next year.
Parents and grandparents alike can bring tiny tots with their eyes all aglow to the store, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., until Christmas Eve.
