Hello, Amanda Pallay here! I’m coming to you live from …well, that doesn’t matter. What does matter is that the AMAZING company I work for, Quicken Loans, is one of the major sponsors of the Department of Veterans Affairs VA for Vets hiring fair taking place in Detroit’s Cobo Center this week from June 26-28.
By now, if you’ve read anything I’ve written, you know how much it means to me to support our troops, and how proud I am that Quicken Loans goes above and beyond to help those men and women of the armed forces. Whether it’s through community outreach programs or hosting incredible events like the 2011 Quicken Loans Carrier Classic, we do what we can to lend a hand.
This first-of-its-kind hiring fair is comprised of three seperate events: a job fair, a small business conference and an open house. And according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, it’s the largest hiring event that the VA has ever done.
The hiring fair event features 230 employers and 25,000 job openings. It’s free, and all you will need is proof of military status to enter. The following IDs are accepted: military ID card, VA ID, VA hospital card, DD214, or benefits letter.
More than7,000 veterans pre-registered for the event, and is expected to attract at least 6,000-10,000 veterans, business owners and federal employees.
The best part about the four-day event is that it’s not just about finding veterans jobs at the “VA for Vets Hiring Fair.” The National Veteran Small Business Conference part of the event will include networking and training for veteran-owned businesses, and the open house will help veterans recieve resume assitance, interview techniques, career coaching, education about veteran benefits and health screenings. Talk about all-encompassing! It’s blows me away to think of how much help that this one event can do for so many people
At Quicken Loans, not only are we happy to support events that help the men and women of the armed forces, but we’re extremely committed to hiring veterans. No one says it better than Bill Emerson, CEO of Quicken Loans (and all around nice guy): “The talent and discipline (veterans) can bring to Quicken Loans will help us continue to be Engineered to Amaze. We feel that veterans have a distinct and diverse set of skills that will fit right in here at Quicken loans and the other companies in the Rock Venture family.”
What’s that mean in layman’s terms? We mean skills like:
- Valuing leadership and teamwork, and holding themselves to the highest standards.
- Performing well under pressure and adapting easily to a variety of working conditions.
- Working well with diverse groups of people, and offering a wide variety of unique skills.
The National Veteran Small Business Conference and Expo and the VA for Vets hiring fair starts today, June 26, at Cobo Hall, and runs until Friday, June 29. If you’re interested in finding employment, getting some career counseling, or just want to check out what people are doing to help vets, I highly recommend stopping by.
Don’t forget to say hi to the awesome folks manning the Quicken Loans booth! Tell them I sent you!
