On Thursday, October 27, 2011, Quicken Loans CEO Bill Emerson and the Community DIFF Team kicked off their partnership with Chrysler Elementary School in Detroit. As part of our adoption of Chrysler Elementary, we joined the Detroit Public Schools Volunteer Business Corps Program, which creates and supports robust partnerships between Detroit Public Schools and area businesses and community organizations to help students improve their academic performance. To celebrate the new partnership, we held a fun-filled event to engage the students at Chrysler Elementary School.
The event began with an introduction from Chrysler Elementary School Principal Linda Whitaker and Detroit mascots Hooper of the Detroit Pistons, and Paws of the Detroit Tigers. The kick-off centered on the game “Are you smarter than a Chrysler Student.” A group of Chrysler students played against Quicken Loans CEO Bill Emerson, Fox 2 Morning Anchor Anqunette Jamison, Vice President for Public Relations at Fathead Brian Stevenson, and coordinator of the DPS Volunteer Business Corps Brooke Franklin. After several questions and help from the talented students in the audience, the Chrysler students won the close match. As the winners, each student received four tickets to see the Red Wings play against the San Jose Sharks. To make sure every student felt like a winner, we gave each student a custom “I’m Engineered to Amaze” book bag and a delicious Just Baked cookie.
“This partnership demonstrates that Quicken Loans and Detroit Public Schools are actively engaged in promoting and maintaining high student performance and academic achievement required for our future work force,” said Chrysler Elementary School Principal Linda Whitaker. “We are pleased to be able to assist our students, parents, staff and community by enhancing our environment with crucial supplementary resources whenever possible.”
Wendy Kemp, Quicken Loans Director of Community Relations, added, “The future of this city relies on quality education for its youth. We are dedicated and committed to helping educate Chrysler Elementary School students.”
