Interesting article in BloombergBusinessweek’s blog today about Quicken Loans CEO Bill Emerson.

How he gives out his cell phone number to all Quicken Loans team members. It’s true. Any of us can go on our intranet site and get his celly. It’s there and it’s that simple. I’ve never actually called him, just to clarify. But I can. And that’s cool.

That’s how we do things here at Quicken Loans. When we say “flat organization” we mean flat. It’s a big reason why I’ve been here nearly seven years.

Anyway, I liked the article and wanted to share here on the Quicken Loans blog.  Here’s a bit of it:

Every now and then, a Quicken Loans employee accidentally “pocket” dials Chief Executive Bill Emerson. He doesn’t mind. “It’s an open culture,” he says. In the past six years, the 49-year-old has given out the number of his personal cell phone to each of the Detroit company’s 8,500 employees.

Perhaps surprisingly, Emerson receives only about five or six calls from employees each month, including a few from interns. Most calls are about regular business. He says he has not yet received any prank calls

You wouldn’t think that the CEO of a company with over 8,000 team members would be happy to have everyone know his personal cell. But then again, you wouldn’t think a mortgage company would be like Quicken Loans. We aren’t like everyone else, I can tell you that after spending seven years here. Not close.

  1. I would like to offer my phone number to Mr. Emerson. I am a native Michigander and connoisseur of Michigan’s appeal from Detroit to Marquette. The obvious “adventurous spirit” within Mr. Emerson would most likely be intrigued to allow me a mere 30 minuets of his time. Therefore simply e-mail me back and I will willingly forward my phone number, personal address and any other items necessary to insure my sincerity and absolute confidence to entice, intrigue, and challenge to inspire.

I truly look forward to the opportunity, and await your reply

    Chris.
