Get to know the president of the largest minority arts organization in Michigan. Oliver Ragsdale Jr. leads the Arts League of Michigan and the Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center. Through its core programs, the Arts League educates people on visual and performing arts and promotes African and African-American cultural arts. The Carr Center is a popular place to see live musical performances, art exhibitions and theater productions. Chad Weinbaum is another guest who is a big supporter of the centers and arts education in Detroit. The Detroit Historical Society is dedicated to ensuring that the history of Detroit is preserved for generations to come. One current exhibit, “Detroit Decides: Our Most Celebrated Buildings,” which opened February 1 and runs until July 13, features celebrated buildings in and around the city. Meet a woman who is passionate about promoting cycling in urban areas. Yvonne Rucker is the president of BikeVON, a pilot program that targets inner city youth. Yvonne envisions many Detroit youths training and riding bikes in the International Velodrome this summer in Rochester Hills, Mich. She is hosting a fundraiser Sunday, March 16, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Boll YMCA in Detroit. Tickets can be purchased by emailing BikeVON14@gmail.com.
