Opportunity Detroit: Detroiters Creating Opportunity

Don’t wait for opportunity to come to you; go out and find it! Hear what Motor City citizens are doing to find opportunity tonight on your favorite radio show, Opportunity Detroit. Join hosts Paul W. Smith (WJR) and Stephen Luigi Piazza (Quicken Loans) at 7 p.m. tonight on WJR-760 AM for the most inspirational hour of your Friday night. Here’s a quick rundown of tonight’s show.

You’ll hear from some Detroit do-gooders. Tom Nardone is the leader of the Detroit Mower Gang, a volunteer group of “renegade landscapers” that care for abandoned playgrounds in Detroit. Since tightened city budgets are getting in the way of children playing outside, volunteers in the Detroit Mower Gang get together every other Wednesday evening to whack weeds and mow park lawns. They’ve even got a special contest coming up this May: The “Motown Mowdown.” It’s a mowing event where teams of volunteers will try to mow as much as possible in a 24-hour period. Get more information on the Detroit Mower Gang and learn how to join by checking out their website or Facebook page, and by tuning in tonight!

You’ll hear from some people who are creating opportunity for Detroit. Kevin Krease is the executive project director of Action Sports Detroit LLC, a team that’s working hard to bring the ESPN Summer X Games to Detroit for 2014 through 2016. The group believes that the presence of the X Games would help bring native Detroiters back to the city, and they are working hard to convince ESPN that the X Games belong in the D. The summer events include BMX (bicycle motocross), skateboarding, rally car, motocross and wakeboarding. We’re cheering hard for Kevin and his devoted team, and we hope they’ll make X Games Detroit a reality! Check out this potentially amazing opportunity at www.XGamesDetroit.com or on their Facebook page.

You’ll hear how Detroiters are getting youths off the streets. Carlos Sweeney is the founder of the Downtown Youth Boxing Gym Program, a free program for Detroit-area students that’s giving kids a fighting chance to succeed in life outside of their neighborhoods. Recently featured on NBC Nightly News, the program encourages youth to participate in a demanding physical, academic and social program in which trainers, tutors, counselors and social workers provide daily services directly at the gym. Carlos will be joined by Jessica Hauser, the program development director, to tell us how the gym is helping our community’s youth grow. Listen in to learn how you can help, or visit www.downtownyouthboxing.org.

Don’t forget to tune in this Friday evening, March 22, at 7:00 p.m. ET for all that and more!
