Quicken Loans is excited to present the Love Your Space Sweepstakes on HGTV where one lucky winner will receive $25,000 and a design consultation with HGTV Interior Designer, Linda Woodrum. She has decorated 17 HGTV Dream Homes, five HGTV Green Homes and the first HGTV Smart Home.
We know you’re excited about the contest, which runs until August 29, so we asked Woodrum some questions about how she fell in love with interior design and what tips she can offer to help you think about your next creative home project.
You’ve designed interiors for homes all over the country and have been featured in multiple national magazines. How did your love for interior design come to be?
I remember being in fifth or sixth grade and not liking my bedroom. It really was quite unsettling – I just didn’t like being in the room. So, I asked my mother – who could do anything – if she would make me new curtains and bedding, and if we could paint the walls and create the bedroom of my dreams. She was wonderful and said yes, and after lots of fun choosing fabrics and looking at paint colors and making decisions, she did lots of work and made my wish come true. It was a pink and white fantasy. I even covered all of my books in pink paper. This was my first “decorating” project and it felt so wonderful to be part of the process and be so happy with the results. I loved that room for such a long time.
How did you get involved with HGTV and what’s your favorite part of your job?
The connection with HGTV came from a publisher of a magazine I had worked with who was contacted when HGTV was on the search for a designer. I had worked with him on many projects and he recommended me. I love designing the homes for HGTV so much, that it really is difficult to choose the best part of the job. Getting excited when you see the plans for the first time and you start thinking about how you want it to turn out, then actually picking all the wonderful products that go into building and furnishing the home is very special, as is the day the home is actually installed and it finally becomes a real home. But maybe the best part, is meeting the person who wins the HGTV Smart Home, because that is really what this is all about – creating a very special home for someone we don’t get to meet until the house is completed. It’s quite wonderful.
With regard to home décor, what seems to be a common problem for people?
Decisions, decisions, decisions – and I am at the top of the list on this one. It’s scary because it’s overwhelming. It costs money, and you feel afraid of being stuck if you make a bad decision. The more homework you do before you get started, such as looking at shelter magazines and books, trying out paint on walls and living with it for awhile, understanding how you live and how it will affect all your choices and understanding what your style is and how to create it in your home, will help you make good decisions. Things done on impulse usually don’t turn out so well.
What design tips do you have for those with a small space to work with?
If you have a smaller space you’re furnishing, you just need to downsize the scale of your furniture and use fewer pieces. A club chair can be 31″ wide by 30″ deep or 36″ wide by 40″ deep. That’s a big difference, and a couple of big pieces in a small room can overwhelm the space. Also, if you can see the legs on a chair or sofa it feels lighter in weight. It’s a wonderful time to be looking for furniture, as so much is available scaled to so many styles and spaces.
How do you take a room from drab to fab so you can love your space?
Accessories are always the sparkle in a room that bring it from drab to fab. I am a great believer in using neutral colors on the major pieces of upholstery and putting color on pillows, vases, flowers, artwork and the paint on the walls, which isn’t hard or expensive to change if you’re ready to grab a brush. Think of furnishing a room like buying clothes – you have your basics and you change it up with accessories. Sofas and chairs are just like jeans and tops without the fun stuff to change it up.
There you have it fellow design lovers – tips from the one and only Linda Woodrum. If you haven’t entered the Love Your Space Sweepstakes presented by Quicken Loans, what are you waiting for? You can enter daily until August 29!
