After successfully using social media to fortify campaign efforts in 2008, the First Family of the United States is once again trending in social media networks.
Thursday, the First Lady of The United States of America, Michelle Obama, opened a twitter account, giving Americans a never before seen glimpse into the everyday life of the First Family, 140 characters at a time.
White House officials stated that while no official campaigning will be done until there is a GOP presidential nominee, Michelle Obama’s twitter account offers updates on health care, the Let’s Move initiative, and community service efforts her followers can participate in.
After being a member of twitter for only 24 hours, Mrs. Obama has amassed an enormous following of 260,509 users.
Who would ever have thought that the exclusivity of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats during the 1930’s would, more than 80 years later, inspire the President of the United States and the First Lady to use social media to connect with the public on a more personal level.
For cynics still skeptical of whether or not Michelle Obama writes her own tweets, the @MichelleObama account states “tweets sent directly from the First Lady are signed –mo.”
Some political analyst suggest that the opening of a twitter account for Michelle Obama was a strategic move by the current administration to utilize the First Lady’s thoroughly effective communication skills. While bloggers and average Americans are moreover just happy that they can follow the First Lady and receive iCarly footage, MLK Day alerts, and news about health care for veterans.
