After four years’ worth of traditional “single-guy college Super Bowl parties” where my roommates and I would order a smorgasbord of buffalo wings, ribs, French fries and onion rings, I’m ready to change things up. Rather than repeat with the same old snacks, why not cook for yourself? Luckily, I got “The Best Cookbook Ever” as a holiday gift. No really, that’s the title of the cookbook. Authors Eli and Max Sussman give some great recipes to change things up at your Super Bowl party this year. Here are a few of my favorites.
Pretzel Bites with Honey Mustard
No not the box of 20 you find in the frozen food section at the grocery store; these pretzel are full of goodness. Soft pretzels and sports go together like snow and Lambaeu Field, which makes these bites a perfect snack for a Super Bowl party. As the Sussman’s say “once these pretzels emerge from the steamy oven…you’ll be all hot and bothered for these salty bites.” What pulls this whole snack together is the homemade honey mustard dipping sauce. These bites will surely be a highlight at your Super Bowl party – so get them before they’re all gone!
Spicy, Salty Roasted Chickpeas
I can personally attest to how incredible these are. Other than crushed up and pureed into hummus, chickpeas take a backseat on my dinner plate, but these roasted chickpeas are absolutely delicious and very addicting – so make a lot. This spicy, salty snack is a great substitute for the typical French fry. Eli serves these at his Brooklyn restaurant, “Mile End”, and they are always a big hit. The Sussman’s like to call these “the perfect bar snack” and go great with a beer.
Deep Fried PB&J Sandwich w/ White Chocolate Ganache
Is there a better comfort food than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? No, I don’t think so. So how can you make the best comfort food even more delicious? Deep-fry it. This dish will likely have all of your party guests awing over this awesome snack. And the piece de resistance is the white chocolate ganache – a fancy name for icing. You and your guests will be salivating over this crunchy, gooey and sweet treat.
