Characterized by bright colors, woven fabrics and handcrafted pieces, southwestern-style decorating takes influences from Native American, Spanish and Mexican art. Whether you live out west and want your home to reflect your surroundings, or you simply want to incorporate colorful or handmade items into your existing decor, here are some tips to help you embrace southwestern style.
The southwestern decor trend is taking the interior design world by storm. Its quintessential bold and colorful patterns, mixed with neutral and organic materials, have made it a staple around the world. Just a few weeks ago, we posted a blog about the southwestern trend and ways to incorporate it into your home.
It’s always fun to spice up your space with new, trendy pieces, but it can be a little expensive. Want to jump on the southwestern design train without investing a lot of money? Then you’ve come to the right spot! Here are three inexpensive, quick and super easy DIY projects that will bring a touch of the southwest into your home.
Southwestern Canvas Prints
Southwestern style is a combination of Native American, Spanish and Mexican art. One of the style’s most eye-catching elements is its bold patterns and bright colors. An easy way to incorporate this element is with southwestern printed canvas art.
The idea is simple: Tape out a southwestern design on your canvas and paint over the tape.
Traditionally, southwestern decor utilizes warm colors like red, yellow and tan, and cooler tones like blue and green. Personally, I’m not a fan of primary colors; I prefer them a little more subdued. For this project, I opted for more pastel colors.
The great thing about this project is you can get as elaborate or as minimal as you’d like. And they’ll look great hanging staggered on your wall.
Glammed-Up Terracotta Pots
When you think of southwestern style, terracotta is one of the first things that pops into your head. It’s a staple! Looking for a way to modernize this staple? Add some metallic!
Start by taping off the area you want to paint.
Fill in the taped-off area and let it dry.
Remove the tape and be amazed at how pretty your terracotta pot looks with a little dusting of gold.
Southwestern Burlap Print Canvas
Natural fabrics are another traditional element of the southwestern decor trend. I saw these burlap canvases at the store while strolling through the craft aisle, and I knew these would be perfect to combine with a southwestern print.
You can tape off a design like you did for the canvas prints, or you can do what I did and freehand a pattern. I painted some lines, chevrons and arrows on the burlap to create a unique, rustic, southwestern design.
