I think that this video may be one of the best portrayals of the spirit and passion of Detroiters that I’ve seen in a long time. It tells the other side of the story, not the usual bankruptcy, ruin porn and urban blight story we so often read, hear and see.
It features several community leaders who are taking huge steps to bring back Detroit to the city that we all know it can be — a great city. In fact, Detroit already is a great city and always has been. It’s just going through tough times. But leaders like Midtown Detroit’s Sue Mosey, Rock Venture’s Matt Cullen, Kirk Mayes of Brightmoor Alliance and local business owners are working hard to make positive things happen in the city of Detroit.
The video (displayed below) is a great portrait of the progress made so far in the city and a preview of good days ahead. The preview includes a $30 million upgrade to a building that’s sat vacant in Midtown for decades and bidding wars on downtown properties that just a few years back received little attention from buyers.
It’s all part of the changing landscape of Detroit and it’s good news to me. I witnessed first hand as the city struggled and I watched as businesses closed and people moved out. Now I’m seeing the businesses reopen and people move back in. That’s the way it should be.
