Memorial Day is fast approaching and that means summer is just around the corner. For those of us who are veterans or personally know veterans who have passed away, this day is extra special. My own grandfather fought in WWII, making this day a sobering reminder of the sacrifice he and his fellow countrymen made to protect our country.
Sailors came to town Sept. 3-10, as Detroit Navy Week took over the riverfront and surrounding areas to showcase the Navy and commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
Quicken Loans was honored to welcome U.S. Navy Admiral Sinclair M. Harris and his team to our headquarters during their visit to the Motor City. Quicken Loans President Jay Farner shared with them the history of our company, some of the investments we are making in Detroit and our commitment to veterans and members of the Armed Forces. They were able to take a tour of our workspaces and learned more about our culture and process.
There were plenty of free events during the week, including tall ships, U.S. Navy war ships, concerts, ship simulators and activities for all ages. Working so close to Campus Martius and the riverfront allowed me to get an up-close view of many of the events happening in the week-long celebration, including live performances from the Navy Band Quartet, seeing the replica of the tall ship Brig Niagara and most importantly, touring the U.S.S. DeWert!
I was able to join some of my fellow teammates in exploring the ins and outs of life on a frigate. Its mission is to provide air, submarine, and surface protection. In seconds, its combat systems can evaluate threats, select weapons, and respond to any perceived attack. Powered by two gas turbine jet engines, it’s also equipped to carry a helicopter!
It was truly exciting to see and feel what it’s like to be on a Navy frigate and chatting with the crew, especially those who had never been to Michigan before!
We wanted to take this opportunity to thank the U.S. Navy for their service and for sharing a little bit of what life is like for them as they protect our country.
As one of America’s largest VA lenders, we have a VA Unit dedicated to working with qualified service members and veterans to obtain VA loans. We are proud to work with the military community through service projects, events, donations and hiring. In fact, we developed the Quicken Loans Veteran Hiring Program to provide all of the resources necessary for former service members to transition into a career with Quicken Loans.
