While reports surfaced last week stating United Airlines would start charging an extra $10 per round trip, air travelers looking to book a last-minute getaway this month are in luck as lower airline ticket prices are expected to begin on August 21st.
The airfare drop is the first discount many airlines have provided since 2010.
According to the U.S. Transportation Department, the price of domestic airfare surged up 4.8% during the first quarter of 2012 to an average ticket cost of $373.
Yet, the 4.8% increase earlier this year pales in comparison to the 8.3% hike air travelers experienced in 2010 and once again in 2011.
Starting the third week in August, airfares are expected to decrease between 10 and 20 percent!
This means a flight from San Diego (CA) to Providence (RI) that normally cost $380 will drop in price to $222 after August 21st!
As students and members of the workforce seek a final hoorah before summer’s end, lower airline costs will most definitely help many travelers make the most of their last vacation of the summer.
If you need to get away and you can wait until after August 21st, you may find there are many more vacation activities you can participate in when you save up to 20% on your airfare!
