While the holidays are a great time to spend time with family, catch up on each other’s lives, eat good food, and swap gifts, let’s face it – eventually you’re all caught up and need some good activities for the rest of your time off. And if you’re anything like my family, you probably also feel a little broke once Christmas is over, so here are 5 things that will help you save money, while keeping everyone entertained.
1) After Christmas sales. I know I said it won’t break the bank – and I promise if you get the right things, this is a great time to shop. Stock up on wrapping paper, bows, and decorations for next year – this way you never have to pay full price for wrapping paper again. On a side note: anytime after Christmas is also a good time to stock up on your winter wardrobe as spring collections are coming soon, so winter is sharply discounted. For classic styles like pea coats, there’s no better time to buy than now.
2) Go see a movie. Staying around the house for too long can make anyone feel crowded. So round up the crew and go out for a few hours for a movie. After all, this is a cheap way to get everyone out of the house for 2-3 hours.
3) Go sledding, skiing, ice skating, or have a snowball fight. That’s the beauty of winter right? Running around in deep snow is also a great way to work off all those extra calories from the holiday food.
4) Make homemade hot chocolate. While cooking is probably a chore by now, hot chocolate is a simple and classical drink that’s great during the holidays while visiting with family.
5) Board games. While this is pretty uneventful most other times of the year, it’s a great family solution that entertains a group of all ages. This is especially helpful if you have a large family, so stock up on a couple of games just incase. Apples to Apples is a great one for groups of older children to adults.
